Serving Leavenworth and Leavenworth County
Wheatland Plumbing and Septic provides sewer line inspection in Leavenworth, KS, using the same camera equipment and trained technicians we use across Northeast Kansas, about 30 to 40 minutes from our shop in Effingham.
Leavenworth is a good example of a city where a camera inspection actually earns its cost. Homes inside city limits run on the municipal sewer system, which means the line between your house and the city’s main, the private sewer lateral, is your responsibility to maintain. A lot of that infrastructure in the older parts of town predates modern plastic pipe. The Downtown Historic District, Arch Street, North and South Esplanade, North Broadway, Union Park, and Third Avenue historic districts are full of homes built decades before PVC was standard, and plenty of them are still running on original clay tile or cast iron laterals.
Two things make those older lines more likely to fail. First, clay and cast iron joints separate over time, and Leavenworth’s mature street trees send roots straight into those gaps looking for water, which is one of the most common reasons we get called out for a backup near downtown. Second, the clay-heavy soil along the Missouri River bluffs shifts more with the seasons than sandy soil does, which can cause a line to develop a low spot, or “belly,” where waste collects instead of draining. A camera is the only way to actually see either of those problems instead of guessing from the symptoms.
If an inspection turns up a problem that needs repair and the work touches the public sewer main, the City of Leavenworth requires notifying Water Pollution Control before any excavation near it, and any plumbing work in the city needs a permit valid for 180 days. We handle that process for our customers rather than leaving them to sort it out.
What's Included in a Sewer Line Inspection
Camera Run
- A full-length camera pass from a cleanout, drain access point, or septic riser out to the city main tap (or the septic tank connection, for rural properties)
- Live video feed, narrated in real time so you understand what you’re looking at as we find it, not after the fact
Findings & Documentation
- Identification of root intrusion, cracked or separated joints, bellies (low spots where the line sags), offset sections, and blockages
- Recorded footage or photos of anything we find, useful documentation if you’re buying a home, selling one, or just want a record for your files
Straightforward Recommendation
- A plain explanation of what we found and what it means, on-site, in person
- If a repair is needed, an honest read on whether that’s a spot repair, hydro-jetting, trenchless sewer lining, or a full dig-and-replace, based on what the camera actually shows
Our Sewer Line Inspection Process
Step 1: Schedule. Call or request a quote and tell us what’s prompting the inspection (a slow drain, a home sale, general peace of mind).
Step 2: Locate Access. We find the best access point, usually an existing cleanout, drain, or septic riser, so we’re not creating new openings unless we have to.
Step 3: Camera Run. We run the camera the full length of the line and narrate what we’re seeing as we go.
Step 4: Review Findings. We walk you through exactly what the camera showed before we recommend anything.
Step 5: Documentation. You get the footage or photos, whether that’s for your own records or for a real estate transaction.
Step 6: Next Steps. If a repair is needed, we give you an upfront quote for the actual fix. If everything looks fine, we tell you that too.
Most standalone inspections take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the length of the line and how easy the access point is to reach.
What Does a Sewer Line Inspection Cost in Leavenworth?
The cost of a standalone sewer camera inspection in Leavenworth depends on how long the sewer lateral is, whether there is an accessible cleanout or drain opening, and whether the line is actively backed up and needs clearing before the camera can pass. Every property is different, so request a quote or call (913) 833-2304 and we will give you an upfront price for your specific line before we start.
Why Choose Wheatland for a Sewer Line Inspection
We explain what we find, on the spot
Our technicians walk you through the footage in plain language while they're still on-site, not in a follow-up call three days later.
No pressure toward the most expensive fix
A camera inspection tells us the truth about your line. We recommend the repair that actually matches what we see, not the biggest job available.
One crew for the whole job
If the inspection turns up a problem, the same company that ran the camera can do the repair. No handoff to a second contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sewer line inspection?
It’s a diagnostic where we run a waterproof camera through your sewer line, from a cleanout or drain access point out to the city main or septic tank, so we can see the actual condition of the pipe: cracks, root intrusion, blockages, or sagging sections, instead of guessing based on symptoms alone.
How does a sewer camera inspection work?
We feed a flexible camera on a cable through an existing access point and push it the length of the line, watching a live video feed the whole way. If we find a problem, we can usually pinpoint its exact location, which matters a lot if the fix ends up being trenchless lining instead of digging up the whole yard.
How much does a sewer line inspection cost?
Pricing depends on the length of the sewer lateral, how easy the cleanout or access point is to reach, and whether the pipe needs augering first so the camera can see clearly. We will give you an upfront number before we start.
How long does a sewer line inspection take?
Most inspections take 30 to 60 minutes. A longer line or a harder-to-reach access point can add time.
Is a sewer line inspection necessary before buying a house?
It’s one of the most useful things you can check before closing, especially on an older home. A standard home inspection usually doesn’t include a sewer scope, and a bad sewer line is one of the more expensive surprises a new homeowner can inherit. This is especially true in Leavenworth’s older neighborhoods, where original clay or cast iron lines are still common.
How often should sewer lines be inspected?
If you’re not having any problems, every 2 to 3 years is a reasonable check-in for an older home, longer for newer construction. If you’ve had a backup, root intrusion in the past, or you’re buying or selling, get one done regardless of when the last one was.
My house is near one of Leavenworth's historic districts. Could my sewer line still be original clay pipe?
It’s common. A lot of homes near downtown, Third Avenue, and the Esplanade districts were built before plastic pipe was standard, and many still have their original clay or cast iron laterals. A camera inspection is the only reliable way to know the actual condition without digging.
Do I need a permit if the inspection finds a problem and I need repair work?
If the fix involves the public sewer main, the City of Leavenworth requires us to notify Water Pollution Control before any excavation, and any plumbing work in the city needs a permit. We handle that paperwork as part of the job.
Can you tell if I need trenchless lining or a full pipe replacement from the camera inspection?
In most cases, yes. The camera shows us where the damage is and how bad it is, which is usually enough to tell whether trenchless lining will solve it or whether a section needs to be dug up and replaced. We’ll give you our honest read, not the most expensive option by default.
Do I need a sewer line inspection if I'm on a septic system?
Yes. The inspection is not just for city sewer connections. It also covers the line running from your house to your septic tank, and problems there (a crushed pipe, root intrusion, or bad slope) can look like a septic system failure even when the tank only needs routine septic pumping. We also perform sewer line inspection in Topeka and across Northeast Kansas.
